Can a damaged hardwood floor be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes. Scratches, dents, gaps, and water-damaged sections can usually be repaired by replacing individual boards and color-matching the finish to the existing floor, which usually costs much less than replacing the whole floor.
What is the difference between refinishing and re-coating a hardwood floor?
Refinishing sands the floor down to bare wood, then applies new stain and finish. It removes deeper scratches and allows a color change. Re-coating lightly abrades the existing finish and adds a fresh top coat. It is faster and cheaper, but only works when wear has not reached the wood.
